My research program concerns the control of postharvest diseases of perishable produce (tomatoes, potatoes, bell peppers). Currently, my research is focused on the use of virulent bacteriophages for controlling populations of soft rot erwinias. I have also been studying components of postharvest handling to determine their impact on postharvest diseases. In the handling system for tomato fruit, I identified the absorption of water by fruit and warm storage temperatures as factors that increase the potential for disease. I also teach an upper-level undergraduate course, "Diagnosis and Control of Plant Disease".
