Bacteriology
Given the diverse nature of plant-related agriculture in Florida,
the beneficial and detrimental associations of bacteria with agronomically
important plants are abundant and equally diverse in nature. A large
portion of faculty, staff, and student activities in the Plant Pathology
Department
have been and continue to be directed at problems dealing
with plant-associated prokaryotes (i.e., the bacteria, phytoplasmas,
and spiroplasmas). The majority of studies addressed in this area
concern plant pathogens.
Faculty routinely use the latest available techniques in research, such as recombinant DNA techniques. Differential media for selection of phytopathogens from mixed populations have been successfully developed for ecological studies. Rapid identification of many phytopathogens can be achieved. This faculty expertise and the availability of biological material for research makes the University of Florida one of the most exciting places in the world for studies of phytobacteriology
