Molecular Plant Pathology
The term "molecular plant pathology" covers a wide range
of
activities,
including biochemistry, genetics, physiology, tissue culture, and
taxonomy.Pathologists have developed and adapted contemporary technologies
which have significantly advanced the discipline. Our faculty use
molecular techniques to varying degrees in their research.
Research in this area includes studies of molecular genetics of
plant pathogenic bacteria, fungi and viruses; genetic transformation;
chromosome structure; tissue culture of maize, sorghum, and legumes;
protoplast generation and fusion; cell and plant generated somaclonal
variation; evaluation of the variation at the molecular level; and
characterization of the induced variation in regenerated plants.
Gene expression during the plant disease resistance response is
also being studied at both the transcriptional and translational
levels.
