The UF/IFAS Plant Diagnostic Center
Diagnostic Services Rate Schedule (updated 1-9-2017)
The Florida Extension Plant Diagnostic Center (FEPDC) is a fee-based facility provided by the University of Florida-IFAS, Plant Pathology Department. Fees collected by FEPDC are used to pay for diagnostic supplies and equipment and stipends of the lab assistants who process the samples.
Standard general diagnostic charge, in-state $40.00 (out-of-state: $50.00, international*: $200.00) – includes sample dissection and observation, basic dissecting and light microscopy, culturing on semi-selective media, immunostrip if needed, diagnostic report, and management recommendations. Turnaround is generally 7 days or less.
Standard charge, Rapid Turfgrass Diagnostic Service: $75.00 for all US (international*: $300.00) – includes sample dissection and observation, basic dissecting and light microscopy, soil pH and EC readings, culturing, preliminary report (within 2 business days of sample receipt), final diagnostic report, and management recommendations. Samples must be received by noon Monday-Friday to be processed that day.
*International services – International diagnostic service requires prenotification. Per our permits, samples shipped directly to the lab without prenotification and proper shipping labels must be destroyed without opening the package. Call/email for permits/forms: +1-352-392-1795 or firstname.lastname@example.org. International diagnostic service includes sample dissection and observation, basic dissecting and light microscopy, culturing on semi-selective media, ELISA, immunostrip, or conventional PCR assay if needed, and diagnostic report with basic management information. This service is offered via prenotification only. Additional ELISA, PCR, Biolog, sequencing, or other tests will be charged on top of the base charge after consultation with the client.
Special tests we offer in-house as needed and upon request are listed below. Prenotification/consultation by phone or email recommended to discuss sampling and reporting.
Palm diseases: Email photo to email@example.com for guidance on sampling. Fusarium samples require rachis/petiole from a frond showing one-sided blight or reddish-brown stripe. Some living (green) frond tissue must still be present on the sample. Instructions for phytoplasma (LY/TPPD) sampling: http://flrec.ifas.ufl.edu/media/flrecifasufledu/pdfs/LY-TPPD-Trunk-Sampling.pdf.
Baiting soil or irrigation water for Pythium or Phytophthora species: $65 per sample, reported to the genus level as detected/not detected.
ELISA: Charged at market rate (on top of the base charge if a full diagnostic workup is requested); often the cost is around $20 per sample. The total charge may change depending on the number of samples and the cost of the ELISA kit. Most of these tests are conducted once per week; ship samples to arrive Tuesday to be included in weekly test; samples received Wednesday-Friday will be extracted upon arrival, but test will be completed the following week. Current tests include Sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV), Blueberry shock virus, and Potyvirus group. We may recommend sending samples to an outside lab for other pathogens. If outside lab is agreed to by client, all shipping costs and external lab fees will be passed on to the client, as appropriate.
Immunostrips: (can include Cymbidium mosaic virus and Odontoglossum ringspot virus, Potato virus Y (PVY), Impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV), Squash mosaic virus (SqMV), Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV), Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), Acidovorax avenae (bacterial fruit blotch), Phytophthora spp., Ralstonia spp., Xanthomonas axonopodis (citrus canker), etc.).
Biolog: Charged at $20 per isolate if pure bacterial cultures are provided by the client. Or charged on top of base charge, after consultation and approval by client, if needed during full diagnostic workup. Reported as highest level of similarity.
PCR: Charged at the molecular rate of $40 per sample for conventional PCR and $75 for real-time PCR (qPCR) and reverse-transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR). These tests are conducted at additional cost after consultation with the client following full diagnostic workup, or are stand-alone at the request of the client. These tests are offered with the result of detected/not detected. Please call for a list of protocols, or see table below. Most of these tests are conducted once per week; ship samples to arrive Tuesday to be included in weekly test; samples received Wednesday-Friday will be extracted upon arrival, but test will be completed the following week.
Sequencing: We can amplify and clean DNA, sequence it, and analyze the resulting data using NCBI BLAST. PCR is $40 per sample. Cleanup and sequencing (one run, two directions) is $25 per sample. BLAST analysis is $20 per sample. Client is responsible for indicating all services to be performed and for selecting the primers to be used. If no specific primers are indicated, the lab will perform the PCR and sequencing using species-specific (if we have them) or general ITS or 16S primers, as appropriate, and will conduct the BLAST analysis.
