RESEARCH

Emphasis has been centered on the study of diseases that affect the production of ornamental crops in Florida including foliage plants, cut foliage, potted flowering crops, and bedding plants. Research projects are designed to examine new disease controls, pathogen detection, and classification. Current projects include; 1) Identification of bacterial genes and their function during pathogenesis. 2) Studying the effect of temperature and infection as it relates to the bacterial wilt pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum.  3) Identification of bacterial effector targets within plants. 4) Screening for disease resistance within ornamental plants.  5) Examining the evolutionary relationship of xanthomonad species infecting ornamental plant species. And 6) development of disease management strategies for growers utilizing both standard chemistry and biological control. .I maintain an active extension program, including a weekly plant diagnostic clinic. Annually, I also deliver numerous talks to ornamental plant producers and other interested audiences.
