Dates: May 8, 9 & 10, 2006 Place: University of Florida - Florida Extension Plant Disease Clinic Registration Fee: $500.00 - Limit 12 Keynote speaker: Richard G. Christie, recipient of the Ruth Allen Award of the American Phytopathological Society; University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Agronomy Department (retired), and pioneer developer of plant virus inclusion detection by light microscopy. Hosts/Instructors: Robert J. McGovern, Ph.D., Professor, Richard E. Cullen, Senior Biologist, Kris Beckham, Senior Biologist, Anne Vitoreli, Biological Scientist, University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Plant Pathology Department, Carlye Baker, Ph.D., Plant Virologist- Biological Scientist IV, Mark Gooch, Biological Scientist III, Division of Plant Industry. Plant virus inclusions are valuable for diagnosing viruses at the group level, and in some instances can be used to identify a specific virus. They can be detected with a light microscope when properly stained. Inclusions induced by a specific virus have the same characteristic appearance across a host range. The procedures are simple, rapid and inexpensive and can save valuable antisera as well as direct in the selection of proper techniques for identifying plant virus diseases. Course Description: A 3 day introductory course for scientists, diagnosticians, and/or technicians who have no previous experience or limited experience with virus inclusion identification. "Hands-on" labwork will include virus inclusion identification of potyviruses, tobamoviruses, potexviruses, cucumoviruses, comoviruses, tomato spotted wilt virus, and geminiviruses. Other groups will be demonstrated through the use of prepared slides and PowerPoint presentations. Staining techniques, tissue selection, and tissue preparation will be covered. All materials will be provided including use of a compound microscope for each participant. A monograph of virus inclusions will be supplied to participants. Due to limited space and facilities, interested individuals must pre-register for this limited enrollment workshop.
