NIFA Director visits Plant Pathology
Dr. Sonny Ramaswamy, USDA-NIFA Director, accompanied by IFAS’ own Nick Place, Jeanna Mastrodicasa, and Sherry Larkin, visited the UF-IFAS Department of Plant Pathology May 30, 2016 to discuss citrus greening and plant pathology’s contribution to nutritional security, “the existential threat facing us today”. Rose Loria introduced the department and the crucial role of plant pathology in global food security, then Carrie Harmon led a tour of the Plant Diagnostic Center, discussing with Dr. Ramaswamy the importance of early detection and international collaboration in diagnostics. Dean Gabriel and Svetlana Folominova each presented the impact of their work in citrus greening and related disease issues, giving Dr. Ramaswamy a good picture of the problem, and cause for hope for the Florida citrus industry. The meeting concluded with a group gator-chomp in the PDC teaching garden, sending Dr. Ramaswamy off to his next session on a high note.
