Overview/ Purpose
The Spore Report is designed to detect and monitor the sporulating fungal spores presence in the air. The report would allow farmer’s decision to take timely actions to manage important plant diseases, including potato late blight, early blight and brown spots and cucurbit powdery mildews.
Spore data is collected using various spore trapping system, including Rotorod, AIR Program, Yroot, and Passive traps strategically placed in potato commercial fields and at the Hasting Agricultural Extension Center (HAEC) at St. Johns and Putnam Counties. These traps capture airborne spores, which are then analyzed in a laboratory using morphological identification and molecular techniques such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).
