In the time of COVID-19, plants still get sick, and the soil that nourishes them needs care. The health of plants and soil is critical to agriculture, an industry designated an essential service in response to the pandemic. That’s why today, scientists at University of Florida/IFAS laboratories on the main Gainesville campus and elsewhere across the state are working with limited staffing and hours to test samples of soil, water, plants, and even manure sent in from across the state and beyond.

Marcos Vinicius Caiafa Sepulveda, a PhD student in Matthew Smith’s lab at the University of Florida, received a Student Research Award from AOS in 2019 to explore the relationship between those two birds, the Chucao Tapaculo and Black-throated Huet-huet, and the truffles that share their ecosystem.
