Target spot symptoms begin as small dark lesions which enlarges to form light brown lesions with concentric pattern and a yellow halo around it in the transplants.
Lesions can be seen inside the canopy and the micro-climate favors the infection process. The lesions on infected plants can become very large and cover significant area of the leaf in the field.
Easily stages symptoms start as many pink prick lesions which are very hard to separate from bacterial spot and many fungal leaf spot diseases.
Target spot like appearance of the lesion which is characteristic symptom of the disease. The tissue in the infected regions of the leaves becomes necrotic and severely affects photosynthesis.
Few to numerous sunken fruit lesions can be seen on the fruits with cracking in the center which is a characteristic symptom of target spot disease. Bacterial spot disease has raised lesions in general.
Fruit lesions while starts as small lesions can enlarges to form large lesions with cracked centers (X) in the field or in ripening stage or shipment that can lead to post-harvest fruit rotting.
Fungal conidiophores and conidia (spores)can be seen on the lesions on the leaves and fruits. The fungal spores formed on the infected tissues are easily disseminated through wind and rainfall.
Target spot can cause major damage to tomatoes under ideal disease conditions and when fungicides with resistance to the target spot organism are used as seen in this field experiment.
